Steven Odhiambo, Home Missioner

Steven Odhiambo is a Home Missioner in Kenya. He was consecrated at the DIAKONIA World Assembly in Moshi, Tanzania. He applied to attend the Council for World Mission (CWM) School of Intersectional Eco-Theology and Eco-Justice Witness in South Africa, with the endorsement of the DIAKONIA Justice Committee.

Steven reflected on his experience: It proved to be a deeply enriching and transformative experience. The program offered profound insights into the intersections of faith, ecology, justice, and community, and it has strengthened Steven’s commitment to advancing eco-justice within our shared spaces of service.

Purpose and Experience
The training was a transformative journey, equipping us to critically engage with climate change, environmental degradation, and structural inequalities from a theological and missiological perspective. It emphasized the urgent need for faith communities to respond to ecological crises and systemic injustices.

Topics Covered
Environmental Racism : We explored how marginalized communities disproportionately suffer from environmental hazards and the historical roots of these injustices.
Eco-Theology : Understanding the sacred relationship between creation and humanity, and how theology informs ecological stewardship.
Economics and Justice : Examining economic systems that perpetuate inequality and ecological harm, and envisioning alternatives rooted in justice and sustainability.

Key Insights
It’s one thing to study climate justice academically, but to witness its real-world impact is transformative.
Its also time we get out of the boardrooms and confront the challenges the world faces.
These words resonated deeply, reinforcing the call to become advocates for eco-justice and voices for the silenced.
