Who we are
DIAKONIA World Federation today constitutes a powerful ecumenical network of diaconal organizations and communities. It was founded in the Netherlands in 1947 as a symbol of reconciliation after the experience of World War II.
Membership is open to associations, organizations and communities of deaconesses, deacons, diaconal sisters and brothers, diaconal ministers and other church workers.
The World Federation is comprised of the following regions:
- DIAKONIA Asia-Pacific (DAP)
- DIAKONIA of the Americas and Carribbean (DOTAC)
- DIAKONIA Region Africa-Europe (DRAE)
DIAKONIA sponsors a world assembly every four years. In between world assemblies, each region organizes conferences and meetings.
Our key points:
- Diaconal work establishes a connection between church and society. It is present in service as well as every-day life.
- Diaconal work overcomes denominational boundaries; in the broadest sense, it is ecumenical.
- In service and spiritual care, the diaconate gives witness, both to protect injustice and to give expression to the promised Kingdom of God.
